Paradox Interactive's post-apocalyptic strategy game Afterworld remains far from its final release, according to a recent hands-on preview. The journalist who played the game noted that it is one of the earliest versions he has ever encountered, emphasizing that the current state should not be taken as a definitive representation of the grand strategy title.
Early Build Highlights Unfinished Systems
In its current form, Afterworld lacks completed work on its economy and balance. Many artistic assets have yet to be created, and existing elements require further refinement. Additionally, core mechanics may evolve as developers receive feedback from early testers outside the studio.
Despite these limitations, the preview offered a glimpse into the game's overarching concept. Afterworld places significant emphasis on gradual world exploration, the consequences of player decisions, and the formation of a society from multiple tribes. Depending on the chosen development path, players can focus on military technology, food production, river and coastal expansion, or attempt to integrate into an existing society.
The project also includes much larger-scale elements that were barely assessable in the preview. These include a full combat system where players issue orders to squads through commanders, as well as technological advancements ranging from nanobots and mechs to railguns.
According to the author, a full reveal of Afterworld may still be nine months to a year away. Therefore, the current version should be viewed as a demonstration of the direction Paradox is taking, rather than a nearly finished game.
